Playful family photoshoot at sunset in Saffron Walden, Essex.

If you have ever found yourself wondering things like what happens on an outdoor family photoshoot or are family photoshoots posed or unposed then this is the blog to answer your questions.

I’m Jodie, a Essex/Cambridgeshire based family photographer who takes soul warming, wall worthy photo’s of your family having fun in the wild outdoors. With over 25 years experience in working with young children, i will tell you how i guide each family from what to wear to what to print.

What time of year is best for a outdoor family photoshoot: Spring

When i first started talking to Laura about a family photoshoot we were keen to do it as soon in the year as possible but also for it not to be to cold as Amilie being only 3 would feel the cooler temperature more than the rest (I have a few tricks and tips for keeping little ones warm and happy ) Also the closer we get to the Summer solstice the later golden hour becomes. So we went for April.

April is a good time for a sunset family photoshoot with young children because the golden hour is roughly 6-7pm and it’s warming up. Late August and September are also great months for that warm sunny glow for your photos. Here you can check availabilty for an outdoor family photoshoot

Location:

Saffron Walden, Essex.

Locations: Why Saffron Walden is Perfect for Family Photos.

I scout new and excisting locations before outdoor sessions…. you never know if a favourite tree has fallen or long pretty grass has been chopped. Getting the perfect spot for each season is vital to making the backdrop of your photos sensational.

Saffron Walden is one of my favourites for the rugged wildness of Audley End Park which sits beyond the back garden of English Heritage site Audley End House. This Public park has a variety of open meadows, woodland and ancient trees to play beneath. There is also Bridge End Gardens for a more formal option like formal family events or small weddings.

You could even combine a Family photoshoot with an exciting day out at the Audley End Miniture railway, the Saffron Walden Museum or visit the ruins of the Norman Walden Castle. More things to do in Saffron Walden.

What to Wear for a Spring photoshoot.

  • Soft, neutral or pastel tones work beautifully outdoors

  • Avoid heavy patterns/logos → keep it timeless

  • Flowy dresses, light fabrics, and layers add movement

  • Coordinate colours rather than matching exactly

  • Comfortable footwear

  • Think “effortless and natural” rather than overly styled

When i was chatting with Laura about what to wear for the photoshoot she mentioned some really cute dungarees for Amilie to wear as they were light in colour with a subtle spring pattern. So we used Amilie’s dungarees as a starting point and built everyone else’s outfits around them.

It was also important to keep her warm - here are some tricks and hints to keep younger children warm and comfortable whilst still looking cute:

Layer up - leggings under jeans, 2 pairs of tights + extra long sleeve tops under jumpers.

Can we all agree that little girls in dungarees is underrated!

Mum’s outfit shares colours with Amilie’s dungarees and although it is a different pattern it is subtle and the stripes compliment the flowers. Dad and Harrison’s outfits are both different shades the same colour bringing the whole family together.

The reason this looks so effective is the clothing is so neutral, it’s taking nothing away from the family’s faces and actions of being together, making them the sole focus.

My Approach: Relaxed & Playful Photography

I always try to start my family photoshoots with a little walk so that your children can get to know me a little bit, we can chat… i can gauge who is shy and needs a little more warmimg up and who will be the first to try and climb a tree.

There is no stiff posing on my photoshoots…. you don’t have to look at the camera and we will spend alot of time playing games, whispering silly words and moving around.

Child led photography sessions are stress free and fun!

Games, challenges, dares tickles, silly words, cuddles and family sandwhiches .

Capture real moments: laughter, cuddles, little in-between expressions
